History of Scottsdale

In 1888, Winfield Scott was traveling through the Salt River Valley when he decided to purchase a 640-acre plot of land, near what is now the center downtown Scottsdale, in an effort to start a farming operation. Word quickly spread about the warm climate, magnificent scenery, and agricultural capabilities of Scottsdale and more and more people began to settle in the Salt River Valley. By 1896, the residents developed their own public school system. The development of the school system caused a population boom, mainly drawing artists and writers in the early 1900s.

In 1947, the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce was formed from community leaders. The Chamber of Commerce made the decision to keep downtown’s “Old West” look that still remains today. The year 1951 came and the people of Scottsdale appointed the city’s first mayor, Malcolm White. Most notably, White named the city’s slogan, “The West’s Most Western Town”, their official motto. From here on, the city of Scottsdale continued to grow becoming the home of a variety of corporations, like Motorola, and a popular destination for tourists.
